CGEIT Domain 3: Benefits Realization [updated 2022]

Introduction

Certified in Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT Certification) is an IT governance certification provided by ISACA. In July  2020, ISACA released a new version of this certification exam that includes various changes. This article details the third area of knowledge of the exam, "Realizing Value," and hopes that certification exam candidates can expect the changes introduced in this version of the exam and the exam materials in that area. Verify. If you have trouble finding information on this area of the 2020 exam, this article may be the answer to your needs.

Recent changes to CGEIT Certification

As of July 2020, some changes to the CGEIT certification exam are in effect. These changes are as follows:
  • CGEIT Certification has shifted the focus from task descriptions to topic/knowledge areas (or subtopics) in the exam specification overview. The new exam rules include secondary tasks/activities in each of the four knowledge domains that allow candidates to apply their knowledge.
  • Subtopics provide more organized knowledge and tasks within the domain.
  • In  2013 professional practice, Area 3: Benefits Realization each had a 16% test content weighting. Changes in 2020  include an increase in test content weighting in this area to 26%.
  • Strategic control areas were not included in the CGEIT (Professional Practice) exam overview. Instead, this domain was distributed to other domains.
  • The knowledge statement has been rewritten throughout. This is to reflect current technology and is a combination of several to avoid redundancy.
  • These changes are intended to improve exam preparation and provide a better context for applying knowledge.

CGEIT Certification: Revised

The most obvious change in Domain 3 of the CGEIT certification exam is the introduction of the Knowledge Domain subtopic in the exam. The subtopics for this domain are:
  • IT performance and oversight
  • Management of IT-enabled investments
These subtopics are used as a guide to guide candidates for the CGEIT exam  and to organize the secondary tasks associated with these subtopics. Reinventing the wheel isn't generally about me, so I'll use these subtopics to guide the article.

CGEIT Certification Domain 3 objective

The goal of Domain 3 is to ensure that the business and its IT fulfill their value management responsibilities.
  • Whether  IT-enabled business investments offer both  promised benefits and  measurable business value
  • Whether the required features such as services and solutions are provided on time within the budget
  • Whether both IT services and resources continue to create business value for the organization

IT performance and oversight

Performance management

An integral part of performance management is COBIT Performance Management (CPM), a value realization framework. Performance management is based on the following principles:
  • CPM should be easy to understand and use
  • CPM must follow COBIT's conceptual model
  • CPM should provide reproducible, reliable and relevant results
  • CPM needs to be flexible
  • CPMs need to support multiple  types of assessments, including self-assessments, audits, and formal assessments.

Change management

Don't confuse it with change management! The goal of change management is to maximize the chances of successful implementation of changes across the enterprise.

Governance monitoring and reporting

Governance monitoring and reporting requires the following:
  • Balanced scorecard
  • SMART metrics

Quality assurance

The quality assurance methodologies and concepts this secondary task covers are:
  • Components of assurance initiatives
  • IT assurance road map
  • Total quality management

Process development and improvement

This secondary task covers:
  • Processes
  • Plan-Do-Check-Act
  • Six Sigma

Management of IT-enabled investments

To ensure that you benefit and reduce the risk of cost, delay, and  loss  of value, you need to manage your IT-enabled investment.

Business case development and evaluation

Business case development is an important task for IT-enabled investments. It is a useful tool for assessing, deciding, and measuring your investment from start to retirement.

IT investment management and reporting

This covers:
  • Portfolio management
  • Program and project management

Performance metrics

Key performance indicators are needed to determine investment performance. Key performance indicators or KPIs are key factors that determine investment performance. Metrics should be used for all major processes.

“Performance metrics” covers:

  • Objectives and key results
  • Key performance indicators
  • Critical success factors

Benefit evaluation methods

Measuring the profits generated can be difficult because a significant portion of the profits are indirect. Therefore, profit measurements need to be both financial and non-financial.
  • Financially oriented cost-benefit techniques
  • Non-financially oriented cost-benefit techniques
  • The goals cascade

Conclusion

Recent changes to CGEIT are very extensive and touch on almost every aspect of the certification exam. In addition to common changes such as moving the topic / knowledge area to a subtopic with side quests, there are also area changes that affect a particular area of the certification exam.

In relation to this domain, the  weight of each of the test content covered by the domain  has increased from 16% to 27%. Make sure that these changes do not interfere with your acquisition of  this certification. With these changes, CGEIT is better suited to today's technology and has a more organized testing experience.
