So here are eight actionable strategies you can use to prioritize professional development, even with a busy work schedule. 

1. Focus on objectives

If you don't see any benefit, you might give up. If it's getting you nowhere, why bother? Therefore, a strong sense of purpose is necessary when developing learning goals. 

Start by listing the skills and knowledge you most want to learn. Then express them as SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-based) goals.  

Developing a clear action plan can make your study time more effective, increase your self-discipline, and increase your motivation. It also provides a way to measure progress. By doing so, you will have a clearer understanding of the value of continuing professional development.  

2. Manage obstacles and distractions

Identify obstacles that may be making it difficult to stick to your study plan. Overcome each obstacle and come up with a strategy that will help you overcome them.

For example, you may plan to spend time studying during your daily commute. However, I quickly get distracted by messages and emails, and before I know it, I forget about my studies. 

So promise to reserve travel time for study only. Also, don't open your email or check your daily to-do list until you get to work. You can even write that promise as a “contract” with yourself.  

3. Make learning a habit

When you make learning a habit, you are more likely to make positive, long-term changes and achieve the goals you set for yourself.  
To do this, integrate studying into your daily routine. Plan your time each day - no matter how little - study and stick to it!

For example, you can start work early on Mondays and Wednesdays to practice new skills or find specific hours to study. Whatever you do, be sure to do it regularly. 

4. Set boundaries

One of the biggest distractions is often other people. During your lunch break, you may have learned about new industry developments or completed an online assessment, but others may not know this, so the job offers keep coming.  

In cases like this, it can be difficult to say "no". But if you do so with confidence, you'll save valuable study time. That doesn't mean you should be rude or inflexible. Instead, be friendly yet firm. Explain to your colleagues what you want to achieve and ask them to respect your "vacation". 

5. Make every minute count

Many of us assume that learning something new takes a long time. But short blocks are just as effective...as long as you stay focused.

The key is maximizing the impact of every available moment. Start by reviewing your to-do list. What can you realistically accomplish in the time available?  

You only have 10 minutes, so please take advantage of this opportunity. Use this time to learn a little more. Try to focus your energy effectively. Minimize distractions by, for example, moving to a quieter location, turning off your phone, or signing out of your messaging app.

Many people choose to work on professional development after doing everything else. But as tempting as it may be, think about how you feel when you tick off everything on your to-do list. You're exhausted most of the time, right?  

Instead, try to schedule your studies for times when your energy levels are higher and you're more "in the zone." not. 

7. Find your own learning style

We all have our own way of learning. Some people like to read and take notes. Others learn by doing.

Identifying your own learning style will help you learn more effectively. For example, if you find videos more engaging, time spent reading hard through textbooks can be a waste of time. However, keep in mind that different learning formats may suit different learning styles. So experiment and find what works best for each task.

Learning with others often makes the experience more enjoyable and engaging. They can help keep you motivated and offer advice and support. Having someone to check on your progress also helps you focus on your main goals. 

Ask your colleagues if they would be interested in spending more time studying. If so, why not make a study group, read a book together, or study together? Take a course together or complete an online course. 

Social media sites like LinkedIn and Twitter can also help you find other professionals in your industry who are interested in learning or who can offer training and advice.  

9. Mentor someone or be mentored
